About Semaglutide

Semaglutide is a GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) receptor agonist. It mimics a naturally occurring gut hormone that signals fullness to the brain, slows gastric emptying, and supports healthy blood sugar regulation. It has one of the longest and most extensively studied clinical track records of any GLP-1 therapy.

What the research shows

The phase 3 STEP 1 trial, a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study of adults with overweight or obesity, found that participants using once-weekly semaglutide plus lifestyle intervention achieved substantial, sustained mean weight loss of nearly 15% over 68 weeks, with the large majority of participants losing at least 5% of body weight. A follow-up analysis (STEP 1 extension) found that weight was generally regained after treatment was discontinued, underscoring that semaglutide functions as an ongoing therapy rather than a short-term fix.

Other trials in the STEP program have shown similar sustained results out to two years of continuous treatment, with the most common side effects being gastrointestinal (nausea, diarrhea, constipation), typically mild-to-moderate and more common during dose titration.

Who it's for

Semaglutide is generally considered by adults seeking a physician-supervised, evidence-based approach to appetite regulation and weight management, particularly those beginning a GLP-1 program for the first time given its long safety track record.

How It's Administered

Semaglutide is administered as a once-weekly subcutaneous injection. Your physician will determine your starting dose and titration schedule based on your evaluation, gradually increasing the dose over time to help minimize gastrointestinal side effects.

Program length is individualized. Many patients continue GLP-1 therapy on an ongoing basis alongside lifestyle changes to support long-term weight management, since clinical data shows weight is commonly regained after stopping treatment.

Safety & Considerations

The most commonly reported side effects across clinical trials are gastrointestinal — nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, and constipation — most often mild-to-moderate and more frequent during dose escalation. Serious but less common risks reported in trials include gallbladder-related disorders.

Semaglutide is not appropriate for everyone. Your physician will review your personal and family medical history during your evaluation, including any personal or family history of certain thyroid tumors, to determine whether this program is appropriate for you. A physician evaluation and valid prescription are required, and not all applicants will qualify.
